Abstract: Studies influence of summer river runoff on wintertime formation of land-fast ice in Kara and Laptev Seas, using CTD measurements from 1993-96 to suggest mechanism forming warm intermediate layer in seasonal pycnocline. Heat exchange governs evolution and position of fast-ice edge at periphery of river runoff. River water rich in suspended matter can be located in zone of drifting ice and polynya.
