Abstract: Reviews reported blood parasites from wild and captive penguins, including one from sub-Antarctic Gough Island. Discusses dynamics of haematozoan infection; factors which could alter present equilibrium; and potential risks from exposure to intensified or introduced infection. Suggests standardized methodologies to increase understanding and facilitate timely detection of any changes in infection dynamics. In special issue Proceedings of the Third International Penguin Conference.
