Record #153395:

Penguins: paradoxes and patterns / J.P. Croxall, L.S. Davis.

Title: Penguins: paradoxes and patterns / J.P. Croxall, L.S. Davis.
Author(s): Croxall, J. P.
Davis, L. S.
Date: 1999.
In: Marine Ornithology. (1999.), Vol. 27 (1999)
Abstract: Summarizes main features of breeding biology, ecology and demography of penguins, identifies consistent patterns across species and highlights anomalies. Discusses potential links between ecology, behaviour and demography within groupings, and potential paradoxes in migration, fasting, mate fidelity, brood reduction, demography, and duration of breeding seasons. Divides penguins into two groups: resident species, feeding inshore with short fasts ashore, breeding at an early age and having low divorce rates, and; migrant species, feeding offshore with long fasts ashore, breeding at older ages and having higher divorce rates. Discusses relative importance of year-round abundance and predictability of prey, and latitudinal-influenced time available for breeding. In special issue Proceedings of the Third International Penguin Conference.
