Abstract: | NE Atlantic water has warmed considerably since 1996. Towards Iceland, cold, less saline water dominated. Western Barents Sea was warmer than usual at year's end. Herring and capelin larvae were abundant, plankton in Nordic Seas was significantly higher early in season. Increased zooplankton fed herring. Harmful algae bloomed in southern North Sea and Skagerrak, killing farmed salmon and wild fish. Current studies include uptake of CO₂ in Greenland Sea, and its influence on greenhouse effect, effect of trawling sea kelp on fish and poison algae, and algal poison in Norwegian waters. |
