Abstract: | Compares geopotential thickness data from TIROS Operational Vertical Sounders (TOVS) on NOAA11 and NOAA12 polar-orbiting satellites with data from balloon-based radiosonde flights over Antarctic continent and surrounding oceans, using data from three special observing periods of First Regional Observing Study of the Troposphere (FROST) project. Discusses significant deviation for TOVS-derived thickness values over continental Antarctica, as opposed to highly correlated results for oceanic regions. Compares TOVS retrievals with analyses from Australian Bureau of Meteorology's Global Assimilation and Prediction (GASP) system. In special edition Antarctic FROST project. |
