Record #153331:

Oceanographic conditions at the time of the 1998 event / Rob Murdoch.

Title: Oceanographic conditions at the time of the 1998 event / Rob Murdoch.
Author(s): Murdoch, Rob.
Date: 1999.
Publisher: Wellington, New Zealand: Department of Conservation
In: Unusual mortality of the New Zealand sea lion, Phocarctos hookeri, Auckland Islands, January-February 1998. Report of a workshop held 8-9 June 1998, Wellington, and a contingency plan for future events. (1999.),
Abstract: Describes oceanographic conditions around New Zealand at time of unusual mortality of Hooker's seal lions on sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands. Surface waters were colder than average due to El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event, though warmer water around central New Zealand produced toxic phytoplankton blooms, including new species of Gymnodinium. Concludes that presence of toxic algal species at time of seal lion deaths cannot be ruled out as causative agent of deaths.
