Record #153330:

Examination of 'slime' collected near the Auckland Islands, February 1998 / Lincoln Mackenzie.

Title: Examination of 'slime' collected near the Auckland Islands, February 1998 / Lincoln Mackenzie.
Author(s): Mackenzie, Lincoln.
Date: 1999.
Publisher: Wellington, New Zealand: Department of Conservation
In: Unusual mortality of the New Zealand sea lion, Phocarctos hookeri, Auckland Islands, January-February 1998. Report of a workshop held 8-9 June 1998, Wellington, and a contingency plan for future events. (1999.),
Abstract: Describes cohesive grey slime collected in vicinity of sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands during period of unusual mortality of Hooker's sea lions at breeding colonies on islands. Concludes that sticky mucilage was probably produced by phytoplankton with possible resemblance to Phaeocystis spp., but that association between slime and sea lion mortalities is purely speculative. Includes suggested protocol for sampling phytoplankton and marine slime.
