Developmental strategies of Koenigia islandica, a high-Arctic annual plant / Ola M. Heide, Yngvar Gauslaa.
Title: | Developmental strategies of Koenigia islandica, a high-Arctic annual plant / Ola M. Heide, Yngvar Gauslaa. |
Author(s): | Heide, Ola M. Gauslaa, Yngvar. |
Date: | 1999. |
In: | Ecography. (1999.), Vol. 22 (1999) |
Abstract: | Plants from Dovre mountains and Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, were studied in controlled environment. Intact seeds germinated poorly, but scarified seeds germinated rapidly at 21deg.C. No light was needed, nor did fluctuating temperatures help. Dry matter production was optimal at 12deg.C in both short and long day conditions. Flowering was very rapid and independent of day length, even in high-Arctic population. It is concluded that this species succeeds in many latitudes by its conservative germination, low temperature optima for growth and reproduction and indifference to day length. |
