Equilibrium and non-equilibrium models of livestock population dynamics in pastoral Africa: their relevance to Arctic grazing systems / R. Behnke.
Title: | Equilibrium and non-equilibrium models of livestock population dynamics in pastoral Africa: their relevance to Arctic grazing systems / R. Behnke. |
Author(s): | Behnke, R. |
Date: | 1999. |
In: | Rangifer. (1999.), Vol. 20(2-3) (1999) |
Abstract: | Correct stocking rate may be determined if rainfall is reliable, but in semi-arid Africa it is more useful to adjust stocking rates rapidly to track sudden changes in feed. In northern latitudes, non-equilibrium models developed for semi-arid environments do not capture complexity of plant- herbivore dynamics dependant on rain, snow cover and temperature on mountains and tundras where reindeer are found. |
