Functional and comparative digestive system anatomy of Arctic ungulates / R.R. Hofmann.
Title: | Functional and comparative digestive system anatomy of Arctic ungulates / R.R. Hofmann. |
Author(s): | Hofmann, R. R. |
Date: | 1999. |
In: | Rangifer. (1999.), Vol. 20(2-3) (1999) |
Abstract: | Dietary niche, feeding type classification and seasonal strategies of Rangifer tarandus and Ovibos moschatus are discussed in relation to anatomy of digestive system. Classification criteria are substantiated and critically discussed. Eurasian mountain reindeer, barren ground caribou, Svalbard reindeer and Victoria Island caribou are seasonally adaptable, opportunistic ruminants, but Svalbard deer have adapted to lack of lichen by coping better with fibrous forage. Muskoxen are typical grass and roughage eaters with very long retention time. |
Notes: | Rangifer. Vol. 20(2-3) :71-81 (1999). |
