Abstract: Describes doubly labelled water (DLW) method of estimating free living energy expenditure. It does not necessarily equal energy requirement, but may be combined with faecal sampling and other estimates of correction factors, or used to validate factorial models. Besides use of isotopes of ²H and ¹⁸O in DLW method, natural variations in abundance of ¹³C and ¹⁵N in environment may be exploited to study diet selection.
