| Abstract: | Historically, pendulum of scientific research swung between pure science and profitable applied science, and Spitsbergen under Swedish- Norwegian union was case in point. Talk describes relationship between research and search for natural resources, especially minerals, phosphorites, coal and fish. Nordenskiöld and his collaborators Dickson, Nathorst and De Geer had in mind Swedish-Norwegian colony on Spitsbergen, with big contribution to geology. Aktiebolag Isfjorden went ahead fairly quietly, so as not to awaken foreign interest and opposition. Russian support for North-east Passage of Finland Swede was accompanied by opposition to Svalbard project by other Russian potentates. To balance mainland frontier dispute, claim was reduced. Section discusses notion of "effective occupation" in international law, which was being supplanted by sector claims in northern Canada and later in Antarctica. |
