Record #153199:

Problem vid nutida arktisk gruvbrytning / Agne Rustan.

Title: Problem vid nutida arktisk gruvbrytning / Agne Rustan.
Translated title: Problem of present-day Arctic mining.
Author(s): Rustan, Agne.
Date: 1999.
Publisher: Stockholm: Jernkontorets Bergshistoriska Utskott
Language: Swedish.
In: Arktisk Gruvdrift. Teknik, vetenskap och historia i norr. Föredrag presenterade vid ett seminarium på Jernkontoret den 2 april 1998. (1999.),
Abstract: Author tried Internet, databases and booksellers for hits on "Arctic + mining" and "permafrost", with meagre results. Of 36 hits for first topic, none was relevant. Article describes regions in northern hemisphere with full, partial and occasional permafrost. Extra disadvantages include melting, dark, wind, access (especially for heavy loads), metal embrittlement, freezing of oils and greases and boredom of miners in rest periods. Some disadvantages occur in transport of, e.g. ores in trains, where rails may crack or wheels get "Flats", or ore itself may freeze together after wetting. Underground there may be ice lenses to keep cool. One advantage underground is that back- filling may be done with water or water-waste-stone mix in stope and pillar work. In Far North, Inuit can be readily trained up to normal standards, despite lack of mining culture.
