| Abstract: | Reviews iciness on Earth, working back from present. Discusses pre-Mesozoic glaciations identified from glacial debris preserved within stratal records, rare glacial pavements and landforms, and geochemical proxies for climate coolness. Sections cover: recognition and preservation of ancient glacial records; ice ages of Late Palaeozoic (including Antarctica part of Gondwana), Late Devonian-Early Carboniferous, Late Proterozoic (including Greenland and Antarctica), Early Proterozoic, and Archean of South Africa; and discussion of causes of climatic variations. Concludes that ice age record through 3 billion years of Earth history reveals climate largely produced by tectonobiogeochemical interplays within complex crustal, oceanic and atmospheric systems, moderated by orbital variations and occasionally interrupted by bolide impacts. |
