| Abstract: | 200 years since Laestadius's birth, article summarizes his life and revival that he fostered. In 1830s he defended Saami nomadic life against those who wanted them settled. Their misuse of alcohol was nothing to do with nomadism. At same time he believed in possibility of good harvests if bogs were drained. Besides known landmarks of Laestadius's work and heritage, article describes relations with English-run copper mine and its care of workers, including bringing in Finnish-speaking pastors. |
