Changes of snow cover thickness measured by conventional mass balance methods and by global positioning system surveying / Wilfred H. Theakstone, Frank M. Jacobsen, N. Tvis Knudsen.

Title: Changes of snow cover thickness measured by conventional mass balance methods and by global positioning system surveying / Wilfred H. Theakstone, Frank M. Jacobsen, N. Tvis Knudsen.
Author(s): Theakstone, Wilfred H.
Jacobsen, Frank M.
Knudsen, N. Tvis.
Date: 1999.
In: Geografiska Annaler. Series A. Physical Geography. (1999.), Vol. 81A(4) (1999)
Abstract: In special issue on Methods of Mass Balance Measurements and Modelling. States advantages of kinematic surveying by global positioning system (GPS) over probing of snow cover in giving information on changes in glacier surface level and snow thickness between surveys. Many points can be fixed by GPS surveying, and technique is usable in bad weather. Precise coverage can be maintained. Data obtained from studies at Austre Okstindbreen, Norway, show good performance of GPS, and benefits of surveying several glaciers within area.
