Abstract: In special issue on Methods of Mass Balance Measurements and Modelling. Uses thermal band of LANDSAR satellite for estimating surface temperature distribution of debris top surface of Lirung Glacier, Nepal Himalayas. Amount of melt water estimated was compatible with discharge from glacier basin for periods of monsoon season, 1985, and pre-monsoon, 1996. Amount of discharge was much larger than amount of precipitation over basin, so suggesting that melt water contributes significantly to river flow as result of shrinkage of glacier.
