Abstract: In special issue on Methods of Mass Balance Measurements and Modelling. Presents accumulation rate measurements from several seasons at Taylor Dome, East Antarctica. Compares net accumulation results from direct burial rate measurements and β-activity firn cores along 35 km traverse, finding them consistent. Shows that slight surface topography gives considerable variations. Emphasises that mass balance measurements in this environment must rely on spatial and/or temporal averaging.
