Abstract: In special issue on Methods of Mass Balance Measurements and Modelling. Evaluates different methods of mass balance measurement on glacier Kongsvegen, Spitsbergen, Svalbard, particularly global positioning system (GPS). Finds GPS profiling can be used on large glaciers to monitor geometry changes, ice flow and net mass balance changes, supported by ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey to give snow distribution variability over long distances. Suggests radioactive reference layers could be used to extend net balance series backwards.
