Abstract: In special issue on Methods of Mass Balance Measurements and Modelling. In study of mass-balance distribution of ablation region of Unteraargletscher, Bernese Alps, Switzerland, terms of kinematic boundary condition are determined using high precision aerial photogrammetry. Major problem lies in estimating vertical velocity distribution along surface, and different approaches are discussed, and one evaluated, based on assumption that variation of vertical strain rates with depth is simple. Makes comparison with stake measurements, and finds differences which do not support this assumption.
