Abstract: In special issue on Methods of Mass Balance Measurements and Modelling. Discusses integrated airborne laser scanning (ALS) project to determine mass balance distribution of Unteraargletscher, Bernese Alps, Switzerland, without use of in situ information, conducted in autumn 1997. Digital elevation model (DEM) derived from laser measurements is sensitive to position and altitude of aircraft. Work focuses on assessing and improving accuracy of system by error modelling and development of error-correction algorithms. Discusses potential of method for generation of DEMs of firn areas.
