| Abstract: | Investigates mass-balance conditions in south-eastern Ronne Ice Shelf (RIS), finding maximum ice thickness and mass flux data for Foundation Ice Stream and Möllereisstrom. Based on these new data from Filchner V expedition, and assuming steady state conditions, calculates mean melt rate of 1 m a⁻¹ at ice-shelf base for entire south-eastern part of RIS. Melt rate in grounding-line area of Foundation Ice Stream exceeds other ice streams draining into Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf considerably. Most ice deposited on drainage area of eastern RIS is melted at ice-shelf base. 70% of ice volume from ice sheet does not reach ice front as meteoric ice. |
