| Abstract: | Uses mineral and structural analyses to show characteristics of volcanic ash in nine layers of ice core from Collins Ice Cap, King George Island, Antarctica. Shows seven volcanic cycles 1650-1990. Period 1650-1800 appears quiet, with 18th century more turbulent. Activity was more frequent 1875-1925, with perhaps many eruptions at Deception Island. 20th century showed activity at start of century and in 1950-70s. Previously unreported eruptions should be further investigated. |
