Record #152513:

The Pinatubo eruption in South Pole snow and its potential value to ice-core paleovolcanic records / Jihong Cole-Dai, Ellen Mosley-Thompson.

Title: The Pinatubo eruption in South Pole snow and its potential value to ice-core paleovolcanic records / Jihong Cole-Dai, Ellen Mosley-Thompson.
Author(s): Cole-Dai, Jihong.
Mosley-Thompson, Ellen.
Date: 1999.
In: Annals of Glaciology. (1999.), Vol. 29 (1999)
Abstract: Snow samples collected in 1996 at South Pole show increase in sulphate concentrations and by inference sulphur aerosol concentrations 1991-94, supporting findings that June 1991 Pinatubo eruption and Hudson eruption deposited volcanic sulphate and tephra in South Pole snow. Six snow pits around South Pole show 20% variability in sulphate flux. SO₂ emissions from volcanic eruptions in past 300 years can be estimated.
