Abstract: Evaluates suitability of portable electromagnetic induction (EMI) sounding device for determining sea-ice thickness in winter and spring in Antarctica. Good results are shown for undeformed sea-ice thickness, but deviations are much larger for deformed ice. Conductivity is less than for seawater and ice remains transparent to EM field. Finds it useful tool with ice thickness processing module correctly calibrated for undeformed component of Antarctic pack ice.
