Author(s): Heikka, Gustaw.
Date: 1999.

In: Samefolket. (1999.), Vol. 80(10) (1999)
Abstract: Describes task of Henrik Sevä, Muonio, going to Inuvik at mouth of Mackenzie River to help intensify reindeer herding in local herd of 4000 animals. Owners Nasakauk family sold herd to Lloyd Binder, whose Pulk grandparents migrated from Kautokeino in 1935. Deer were moved from Alaska in exhausting journey by Anders Baer, taking five years. Herd was previously 12 000 animals and will revert to previous system, to summer pasture on island over ice, swimming back in September. Only threat is from bear and wolf, which may be shot without special licence. Land is rented from Inuit owners. Caribou have always been around, but should not be problem, nor should marketing meat. Lichen is plentiful. Sevä's initial contract is for two years.
