Record #15244:
En nordpolsfaerd for 200 aar siden / Johannes Balle.
Title: | En nordpolsfaerd for 200 aar siden / Johannes Balle. |
Translated title: | A North Polar voyage 200 years ago. |
Author(s): | Balle, Johannes. |
Date: | 1932. |
Publisher: | Tilskueren |
Language: | Danish. |
Abstract: | Aim was Pole. Leader was Johan Fleischer, ancestor of Knud Rasmussen, born 1702 at Dragsholm. Journey started in 1728, and is described by Johan Seckmann. They spent time in South Greenland near Godthaab and Hans Egede. Year 1730 was very cold, but coal was found and used to warm houses. Seeds could not be sown until ground thawed at St Hans Day; barley came up just stalks - high enough to hide a man. Their ship Morianen returned in 1731 with Christian VI's order to return home, though Egede could stay if he wanted. He would not abandon his converts. Balle comments that Seckmann wrote his account 55 years later, which led to some inaccuracies. |
