| Abstract: | Functions were applied to study of spatial and temporal variability in pressure during period 1871-1990. Dominant mode explains 33% of total variation, and presents zonal air mass flow. Westerly flow has intensified over last 120 years. Second pattern, which represents 20%, has two pressure systems of opposite sign. Centres of these are over ocean and on NE of region over continent. Third pattern, 18%, consists of large scale pressure system centred over N Ireland and Scotland. Fourth, combining these three, explains 10% of variance. |
