Abstract: Describes multi-channel instrument, glacier Roughness Sensor (GRS), for measuring ice-surface roughness. Kinematic Global Positioning System (GPS) data are recorded simultaneously. Used GRS to collect surface-roughness data near Ilulissat, West Greenland, and on inland ice in drainage area of Jakobshavns Isbrae. GRS data distinguish lake surfaces, wind structures, ridge-and-valley systems, melting structures, and blue-ice area with and without fresh snow cover, and provide ground-truth for remote-sensing data.
