Abstract: Gives use of ice-thickness data from airborne radio-echo sounding of 26 ice caps on Franz Josef Land archipelago, 1994. Estimates ice volume of these ice caps using given empirical relations. Ice-cap volume decreased 1953-93 by 41.9 km³ and area reduced by 209 km². Comparison suggests negative mass-balance rate of last 40 years has been 3.3 times less than in 1930-60, agreeing with data on decrease of mean summer air temperature in comparable periods on Franz Josef land.
