Ice composition evidence for the formation of basal ice from lake water beneath a cold-based Antarctic glacier / R.D. (Reginald D.) Lorrain, S.J. Fitzsimons, M.J. Vandergoes, M. Stiévenard.
Title: | Ice composition evidence for the formation of basal ice from lake water beneath a cold-based Antarctic glacier / R.D. (Reginald D.) Lorrain, S.J. Fitzsimons, M.J. Vandergoes, M. Stiévenard. |
Author(s): | Lorrain, R. D. Fitzsimons, S. J. Vandergoes, M. J. Stiévenard, M. |
Date: | 1999. |
In: | Annals of Glaciology. (1999.), Vol. 28 (1999) |
Abstract: | Describes model where transient wet-base conditions can occur as ice flows onto unfrozen sediments at lake bottom, creating conditions favorable to entrainment of sediments and ice accretion by water freezing. Stable isotope composition of ice at base of Suess Glacier, Taylor Valley, indicates that water freezing, probably lake water, is important in formation of basal ice layers. |
Notes: | Annals of Glaciology. Vol. 28 :277-281 (1999). Papers from the International Symposium on Glaciers and the Glaciated Landscape, 17--20 August 1998, Kiruna, Sweden, J. Kleman (Editor) |
