Abstract: Describes how surficially frozen meltwater lake may be source of meltwater for double-diffusion effect at grounding line of Hells Gate Ice Shelf. Rock outcrops kept snow-free by katabatic winds absorb solar radiation, so allowing production of liquid water. This meltwater can reach subglacial substratum near pinning point.
