Abstract: Presents data and interpretations of structure, strength and behaviour of basal ice and substrate of Suess Glacier, south Victoria Land, Antarctica. Direct shear tests of 36 samples suggest glacier substrate is unlikely to deform at current temperature, though ice lenses and layers in permafrost and lenses of unsaturated permafrost show weak points where glacier beds well below freezing point can be deformed and eroded under certain conditions.
