Abstract: Thesis discusses question of what, if anything, is learnt by travelling natural historians from their journeys, and compares Linnaeus's view of individual plants with Humboldt's study of place as whole. Journeys of Göran Wahlenberg, Academy of Science's botanical journeys from 1820-1840 and zoological travel in same period are discussed. B.F. Fries fitted out seagoing vessels as research stations, leading to Polar scientific voyages later in century.
