Abstract: Bäckman is professor of history of religion at Stockholm, first Saami professor after Israel Ruong. She is much in demand with current interest in shamanism. Her own studies were in sajva, noaidi's familiar spirits. At present she is studying hard conversion of Saami to Christianity, which could be very high-handed, but by no means always. She discusses difficulties of women in academic posts, and tells her own history. Catholic Church has met other religions more skilfully, and in Saami tradition Virgin Mary and Anna replaced Fire Mother and sun.
