Abstract: Presents detailed examination, incorporating statistical analysis, of 35 government and 56 privately-funded Arctic expeditions between 1818 and 1909. Concludes that not only were most major discoveries made by private expeditions but these expeditions performed better on most other measures losing fewer men and ships and being less depleted by scurvy.
