Record #151505:

Twenty one years of string movements on the Liipasuo aapa mire, Finland / Leo Koutaniemi.

Title: Twenty one years of string movements on the Liipasuo aapa mire, Finland / Leo Koutaniemi.
Author(s): Koutaniemi, Leo.
Date: 1999.
In: Boreas. (1999.), Vol. 28(4) (1999)
Abstract: Movements of four 80-100 m long strings crossing 750 m long aapa mire were measured, and two pools were drained and local snow depth and ground frost conditions were observed, to test role of water pressure and ground frost in string motions. Maximum snow depth is c. 1 m, mean annual temperature -1 deg.C and maximum variation in temperature over 75 deg.C. Strings moved 50-150 cm in 21 years, with most active parts in area of steepest gradient. Details of motion and principal factors causing it are described. Movement was as common along contours as down or up (due to ice expansion) slope.
