Forage chemistry and the digestive system in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) in northern Norway and South Georgia / Svein D. Mathiesen, Tove H. Aagnes Utsi, Wenche Sørmo.

Title: Forage chemistry and the digestive system in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) in northern Norway and South Georgia / Svein D. Mathiesen, Tove H. Aagnes Utsi, Wenche Sørmo.

Date: 1999.
In: Rangifer. (1999.), Vol. 19(2) (1999)
Abstract: Comparative chemical and botanical analyses of reticulo-rumen content were carried out on (Norwegian) reindeer in both summers and in Norwegian winter. Summer foods were mainly grass, winter was woody plants and lichen. Degree of fill of gastro-intestinal tract seems to be related to lignin content of food, not only of seasonal appetite and plant availability. Even in southern hemisphere, deer are highly adaptable to different plants.
