Translated title: Science, power politics and natural resources.
Author(s): Awebro, Kenneth.

In: Centennial of S.A. Andrée's North Pole expedition : proceedings of a Conference on S.A. Andrée and the Agenda for Social Science Research of the Polar Regions. (1999.),
Abstract: Describes various attempts to win minerals and coal from Spitsbergen, starting with Nordenskiöld's find of phosphorite in 1864, followed by coprolite, and attempts in 1872 to get agreement from leading Powers to Sweden's exploitation of these resources. Norway objected. First scientific overwintering on Svalbard took place in Mosselbukta that year. In 1907, Swede Billman set up Coal and Trading Co., Advent Bay, originally to search for tin, using coal in smelter. England and USA soon took part, followed by Swedish claims on hopeful areas. Last cases described are in 1911.
