Abstract: Discusses views of physical geography of polar regions proposed by Petermann in 1865, based chiefly on reports of British and Russian explorers. This paper surveys works on which Petermann based his views, draws attention to influential role of these views for subsequent exploration, and considers reasons for their widespread dissemination.
