Record #151096:

The witch-hunt in early modern Finnmark / Rune Hagen.

Title: The witch-hunt in early modern Finnmark / Rune Hagen.
Author(s): Hagen, Rune.
Date: 1999.
In: Acta Borealia. (1999.), Vol. 16(1) (1999)
Abstract: Persecution of supposed witches in 17th Cent. Finnmark was greatest persecution of Norwegians in peacetime. 140 trials were held between 1601 and 1692, with 90 death sentences. Picture is nearly complete, with good sources. C. one in five was Saami. Harsh 30-year rule of John Cunningham, James I & VI's loan to Christian IV, is described. Main accusations were of associating with Devil, rather than specific harm to people, but torture, including water test, was applied with "confessions" forthcoming. Most cases were locally run.
