Abstract: Statistical techniques were used to examine relationships between surface-sediment cladoceran assemblages and 28 physical and chemical variables in 53 small lakes, distributed along steep eco-climatic gradient, from boreal coniferous forest to treeless tundra. In general sites were small, oligotrophic and bathymetrically simple, with little or no disturbance in their catchments. Five main variables were determined - depth, organic content, summer temperature, perimeter and catchment area. Their significance is discussed, and prediction model was set up.
