Abstract: Article tries to avoid usual catchwords of Saami rights discussions and to consider impact of rights debate on social processes and individual choice in Kåfjord in North Troms, where Norwegians, Saami and Kven all have foothold. Can Saami be restored and made visible without imposing new hegemony, replacing that of residence? Population and 20th Cent. history are summarised, and cultural aspects including placenames and Saami youth group GSN (Gáivuona Sámenuorat) are described.
