Record #150394:

Ocean colour and the spatial and seasonal distribution of phytoplankton in the Barents Sea / J. Kögeler, F. Rey.

Title: Ocean colour and the spatial and seasonal distribution of phytoplankton in the Barents Sea / J. Kögeler, F. Rey.

Abstract: Light regime and mixing processes in water masses influence temporal and spatial distributions of phytoplankton biomass in polar seas. Field measurements and estimates for chlorophyll based on data from Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) show that distribution of chlorophyll concentrations in surface waters is closely related to different water masses of region. Highest chlorophyll-like concentrations are found in coastal waters and Atlantic water south of polar front. Ice melting is followed by brief period of high surface chlorophyll concentrations near ice edge, decreasing with increasing latitude. Patterns from satellite imagery are consistent with field observations, though remote-sensing data better because of higher spatial resolution.
