Abstract: Jan. 1999 was 40th anniversary of MV Hans Hedtoft's wreck after hitting an iceberg in howling snow storm. She was KGH's new flagship returning from maiden voyage with crew of 40 and 55 passengers. All were lost, disaster for Greenland's tiny population. Voyage was later than planned. First SOS was heard 11 minutes after collision. German trawler, American coastguard vessel and American and Canadian 'planes at once joined search. Last call was heard as she sank, four hours after she hit. After 7 days, search was abandoned. Article describes enquiry and resulting restrictions and improvements.
