Abstract: | Author has investigated and mapped all pitfall systems in Varanger, 25 in all, with 3358 pits. Hunting fences and pitfalls were used until 1600s. Main part of text is individual descriptions. Three ambush systems are also described. Hunt strategy, dwelling sites, dating, hunting culture and cattle ownership are also discussed. Most deer were probably killed for trade in hides, and eventually herding replaced hunting. |
