Modelling the long-term response of the Antarctic ice sheet to global warming / Roland C. Warner, William Francis Budd.
Title: | Modelling the long-term response of the Antarctic ice sheet to global warming / Roland C. Warner, William Francis Budd. |
Author(s): | Warner, Roland C. Budd, William Francis. |
Date: | 1998. |
In: | Annals of Glaciology. (1998.), Vol. 27 (1998) |
Abstract: | States that for moderate global warming, resulting in ocean temperature increases of a few °C, large increase in basal melting can become dominant factor in long-term response of ice sheet. Ice-sheet modelling results show that increased basal melt rates lead to reduction of ice shelves, increased strain rates and flow at grounding lines, then thinning and floating of marine ice sheets, with consequential further basal melting. Modifies and uses ice-sheet/ice-shelf model of Budd and others (1994) for sensitivity studies on long-term response of ice sheet to prescribed amounts of global warming. |
Notes: | Annals of Glaciology. Vol. 27 :161-168 (1998). International Symposium on Antarctica and Global Change: Interactions and Impacts, W.F. Budd (Editor), 13--18 July 1997, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. |
