Abstract: Examines Aleut structuring of semantic domain pertaining to fauna. Considers variability of species terminology in different languages/dialects as well as changes in animal nomenclature over time, borrowings and neologisms. Suggests principles employed in animal classification, with utility organizing principle for fauna harvested by women and symbolic significance dominant in conceptualizing species hunted by men.
