Record #148865:

Fires of the earth: the Laki eruption 1783-1784 / Jón Steingrímsson.

Title: Fires of the earth: the Laki eruption 1783-1784 / Jón Steingrímsson.
Author(s): Steingrímsson, Jón.
Date: 1998.
Publisher: Reykjavík: University of Iceland Press
Abstract: Eye-witness record of greatest lava flow in historical times. It was accompanied by foul fumes that killed one fifth of nation, large proportion of domestic animals and caused cold weather all over Europe. Revd. Jón Steingrímsson was legendary for stopping flow from reaching his church by sermon, and described eruption in this scientific classic and literary gem. Author found words to describe previously unknown phenomena and made scientific observations. One conclusion was that temperature was below melting point of common rock, so mountains were not likely to melt and cause further disasters. First printed account was in 1907. He was quite certain that God performed miracle in saving his church, and noted how it was done. Similar method was used by man on Heimay eruption in 1973.
