Abstract: Gives numbers of Saami in different countries, dialects and political position in Fennoscandia. In 1970s, from weak position, instruction in and of Saami was launched. In 1980s resources increased, with college at Kautokeino. By 1990 590 pupils in 33 primary schools received Saami instruction. In 1990s matriculation was available in North Saami, and it became independent subject in comprehensive schools. At end of 1990s future is uncertain. 470 pupils at primary or secondary school study (nearly North) Saami. Problems are shortage of material and teachers.
